About the book:
There are places that hold evil, houses so vile, so tainted, that people refuse to live in them. Farnham House is one of those places. Once an inn, this majestic old New England manor house is back on the market, and the price is very reasonable. Sam Cabot is a man tired of moving. Now he wants nothing more than to live a quiet life in the country with his wife and young son. Little does he know that he will soon begin a long, slow descent into madness and that he will spend his summer living with dead things.

Quotes:

  • Look down again and you’ll see that it was nothing.
  • “Sad story, isn’t it”? Carlisle commented without emotion. “About him dying that way.”
  • “Will you offer your wife and only son as a sacrifice?”
  • Excerpt:
The basement was the last stop of the tour. We exited the house and went in through the outside door. Carlisle explained that the stairs down from the kitchen needed to be shored up before they could be used. The basement floor was earthen and the place stank of mildew and ancient earth. The open door cast a wedge of dusky light only about ten feet in, and beyond that there was nothing but darkness. I could tell Sean didn’t like the place, for he shrank against his mother’s leg and clung tenaciously to her. Linda didn’t like it either. She threw me a small unsettled look. Carlisle fumbled around in the darkness for a moment until he located a wall switch and when he flicked it, a single dirty light-bulb, probably of the sixty watt variety, came on and illuminated the area directly over the heating system. Linda and I both gasped, stopping dead in our tracks. I was speechless. One small word came out of Linda and it was spoken in a soft whisper that was filled with awe: “God...”
